Ceramides are fatty substances that are physiologically present in the epidermis. In particular, they fill the spaces between the skin's surface cells and limit the evaporation of epidermal water. Ceramide-based cosmetics help replenish part of these natural substances that are particularly lacking in drier skin. Ceramides are a sort of "cement" of a fatty-waxy nature, which is produced by the keratinocytes themselves and performs two functions of the utmost importance: making the epidermis compact and increasing its impermeability to water.
